I live in the US and I think it's great what you guys are doing for your family. We have always had some land for our garden and my kids have always looked forward to the planting and harvesting(but not so much the weeding and watering). We have "unplugged" a little- no tv, grow our own food and not a lot of processed foods. Hope things work out great for you, sounds like a lot of work, but worth it!
